Grooveeffect's Artist Pages - Featuring The Blue Scholars
Sabzi, Beat Maker of The Blue Scholars chatted with us about his music, his style, and his views on streetwear clothing and its culture. Get to know The Blue Scholars on Grooveeffect's Artist Pages...
Tell us a little bit about yourself...
Been makin music my whole life, makin beats for the last 8+ years. My name is Saba but folk call me Sabzi. I produce and DJ for both Blue Scholars and a group called Common Market. I think tea with cloves and cinnamon in it is the HIT.
How would you describe your sound?
I sounds like good music...really, i just try to make music that captures a significant feeling that folk can relate to. It sounds like people's music.
Beyond that I'd say it sounds like slow motion. It sounds like light reflecting off of Chinatown windows at 5am. It sounds like a bus ride from South Seattle to Everett. It sounds like weeping and butter and guns. It sounds like your mom.
Who are some of your favorite music artists?
Queen, Aphex Twin, J Dilla (of course) and NOFX. Just blaze, Pete Rock, Roger Troutman and DJ Battlecat. DJ Premier and Charles Mingus
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from good people, good food, and other good music... and the weather.
What do you think of the mainstream hip-hop scene?
There is no "mainstream hip-hop scene." Just like there really isn't any "underground hip-hop scene." these are just myths. They are labels that people have conjured up so folk can understand each other when they're talking about different sounds, levels of success, and class distinctions between artists.
That said, I bumps me some radio music.
Well said...How would you describe your sense of style when it comes to fashion?
You'd have to see a post '06 picture.
- If you're currently reading this, and you think I'm a dick, then I probably dress better than you.
- Do you really like the 80's that much? aren't you 17? If so, then I probably dress better than you.
- If you have to read about it to wear it, then I definitely dress better than you.
I wear hella collared shirts. I frequently get my grown man on with the collared shirt, crewneck sweatshirt, sweater, and a healthy rotation of eyeglasses. please stop asking me where I get them.
Since last year, I developed a taste for urinating on all-over hoodies. Whenever I feel stressed I go out and ruin a few. It always makes me feel better.
When I'm not doing that you can find me in a lumberjack coat and a pair of 633's doin music workshops with middle school kids or with a scarf and a sweater and a pair of cre8tive recs building with folk that are serving up soap to your neighborhood fiends.
Anything new on the horizon?
Blue Scholars just shot a video for "Loyalty" and it's scheduled to come out along with a new EP entitled BUTTER&GUN$ in February, we've got a 5 day series of shows we're doing in December here in Seattle, I'm currently finishing up the new Common Market album entitled "Tobacco Road," we'll likely be touring during the spring next year and I'm going to Calcutta in January.
