Like he did in "Where the Wild Things Are", visionary director Spike Jonze created a band out of members of already existing indie bands for his short film "I'm Here". The film debuted this year at Sundance and has been getting great reviews for both the film and the soundtrack ever since.
Jonze created The Lost Trees, made up of Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Aska Matsumiya. The soundtrack also includes current indie favorites Girls, Animal Collective, and Sleigh Bells, among others. These lo-fi, experimental, indie pop and garage rock artists lend powerful but not distracting backing music to this melancholy love story.
The soundtrack includes:
1 There Are Many Of Us - The Lost Trees
2 Beautiful Life - Gui Boratto
3 AB Machines - Sleigh Bells
4 The Past Is A Grotesque Animal - The Lost Trees
5 Did You See the Words - Animal Collective
6 Hellhole Ratrace - Girls
7 There Are Many Of Us (Electric Dream Version) - Sam Spiegel
8 Lonesome Robot Theme - Sam Spiegel
9 Y.O.U - Aska Matsumiya
Not only do The Lost Trees contribute two songs to the soundtrack, but they perform in a concert scene in the film and contribute to the story line, connecting the two main characters (robots) and developing their relationship as they go on a date to a concert.
"I'm Here" was funded by Absolut vodka, thought it has absolutely (hah) nothing to do with vodka.
The story to be was reminiscent of 500 Days of Summer meets Walle meets The Giving Tree. In Los Angeles, humans and robots are coexisting, though robots are clearly thought of as less, working low end manual labor jobs and not being able to do simple things like drive a car. A obedient, nerdy male robot encounters rebellious flirty female robot and sparks fly (literally?) As their relationship progresses, pressures are put on their love and both are tested in how much they are willing to give up.
The film is available to watch on the official website, but only has a few showings a day, you also are supposed to be 21 to watch it because of the Absolut sponsorship but I may have lied a little about the year, it's worth it.
Whoa, whoa, get out the way with that good inofrmaiton.
