I've been pretty bullish on Chillwave ever since I first started getting into it. It's a relatively new genre, with the term first coined on Hipster Runoff about a year ago to describe a warbly cassette tape aesthetic and dreamy loops and beats. You probably know it by the likes of Neon Indian, Washed Out, Toro y Moi, Memory Tapes, Computer Magic, etc.

Well with Neon Indian headlining the SF "All Shook Down" festival Sunday 7/25, and appearing on Jimmy Fallon performing two tracks on broadcast TV a few months back, and with the NY Times and Wall Street Journal chiming in with "is this the next big thing" type articles, I think it's pretty clear that it's on the rise.

I think it's current form is still a little too indie for the mainstream, but remember all the wild electro/electroclash/electro-rock that was surfacing in the early to mid 2000's? Those sounds eventually got Black Eyed Peas-ified and Ke$ha'ed to death and now pretty much define pop music.

And after the garish me-decade of the 80's and the 1987 market crash came the more introverted sounds of the early 90s, and history loves to repeat itself.

So there you have it. I've planted my flag - Chillwave is the future.
